Treaty of kanagawa
On March 31, 1854, the first treaty between Japan and the US was signed. The treaty was the result of a mission planned by the US to open up Japan's export/import which was closed by the Japanese government to foreigners. The US managed to accomplish 2 of the 3 objectives but they were unable to open Japan to trading. It wasn't until 1858 that the US
managed to open Japan up commercially to trading.The United States government were this determined to bringing this policy to a close because if they succeed they would have had access to strategic energy sources.

- Opening the ports of Shimoda
- Opening the ports of Hakodate
- Permitting the establishment of a US consulate in Japan
- Opening Japan up for trade to the rest of the world (not until 1858)
