KATANA
What most people refer to as the "Samurai Sword" is actually called a "Katana"( translates to 'Long Sword' in Japanese). The Katana as it's name would describe was the longest sword a Samurai would carry.

WAZIKASHI
The Samurai always carried another sword with them called the "Wakizashi". Carrying both of these swords gave the Samurai a bigger arsenal of weaponry over a swordsman who carried only one sword. The Wakizashi was used in greater effect in close combat and often gave the final blow to the opponent

TANTOAnother weapon that the Samurai carried was a dagger-like sword called the "Tanto". The dagger-like sword is used for very close combat. The sword is concealed and is also used for surprise attacks against a opponent.
TESSEN
A Tessen was actually a steel fan which took the disguise of a harmless paper fan. The Samurai would use the Tessen for throwing, fending off projectiles and even clubbing people when used in close range. It seems a little strange that the Samurai used swords and knives with their combat but then turn to a Tessen for combat but they were actually carried where weapons were not permitted. So what it becomes is an early example of a concealed or disguised weapon.

SAMURAI ARMOUR
Not an offensive weapon but rather a defensive weapon. The Samurai Armour was especially designed to be as light and as free-moving as possible. This put Samurai into a advantage point with other swordsman wearing heavy armour which had limited movement possibilities.
